Honeycomb: The World Beyond Animals: Full List by Zone
Every named animal
| Animal | Zone | Temperament | Drop | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lucuma Camilla | The Valley | Sociable, curious; mimics other creatures | Wool | Found in open fields where predators are scarce. Follows you once its interest is earned. In the opening hour, copying its behaviour (it jumps, you jump) is what lets you pet it. Lives in stone-pillar nests. |
| Wild Green Zuma | The Valley | Timid, easily spooked | Viscous secretion | Damp, cool stretches near open water; hides under rocks and vegetation, so a clean scan takes patience. |
| Gum Nibis | The Valley | Territorial around its nest | Feathers | Marshes and waterways; brown plumage with teal wing and tail feathers. Players on the Steam forum report being driven off a stork-like bird's nest and needing the tranquiliser dart to scan it. |
| Scorchweaver | The Valley | Hostile; the larger variant is territorial | Not stated | One of the first real hazards. Frozen Way's advice is to scan it from a distance. |
| Imperial Strider | The Headlands | Graceful, cautious; flees when threatened | Horns (shed naturally) | Nests in stone formations. Strider horns lie on the ground around natural nests; one player found nests near the volcano in the middle of the map. The in-game guide tells you to put a strider snack on the ground and back away. |
| Bronze Wox | The Headlands | Skittish, burrow-dwelling; defends as a pack | Fur | Lives near stone formations. When threatened it coordinates with the pack, which can catch you off guard. |
| Woodback Tortoise | The Headlands | Docile, slow | Not stated | Predictable movement makes it an easy early scan. |
| Flux Beetle | The Headlands | Harmless | Not stated | A low-stakes entry for your field notes. The arachnophobia setting turns insects into white orbs. |
| Azurite Lonebid | The Pass | Curious and gentle; very keen hearing | Fur | Deep blue coat with pale spots, found in the cooler reaches. Approach steadily: it hears you long before you arrive. |
| Thessalika Nango | The Pass | Solitary, hard to win over | Shed scales | Armoured plates and a spined crest give it a dragon-like outline. First shown as 'Nango' in Hive Update #13 (Aug 2025). |
| Skittertail | The Pass | Passive | Biological samples | Common on the rocky ground of The Pass. |
| Canul | Not documented | Described as 'the most ferocious creature of Thessalika' | Not documented | Known from the Animal Whisperer achievement (Steam ID TameCanul), which only 2.3% of players had on 10 Sep 2026. |
| Zhalo | Not documented | Accepts snacks | Not documented | Shown being fed a snack when animal snacks were introduced. |

Names, zones and behaviour are quoted or paraphrased from Frozen Way's Sota7 Field Survey Logs on Steam unless the source column says otherwise. The logs say they cover 'only a selection' of each zone.
How befriending works
Scanning an animal with the Analyzer only gives you the basics. Frozen Way's product owner explained at Gamescom 2025 that a wildlife cam watches an animal for a while and then gives you a "recipe" for earning its trust: the food it likes, a ritual it does, a time of day. You then do it yourself. In ProRogueBear's launch video, a Camilla only lets you pet it after you copy it (it jumps, you jump), and each Camilla has to be won over individually.
- Snacks. Animal snacks arrived in Hive Update #14. Striders are shy: the in-game guide says to place the snack and step back. Hold the snack, press X for placement mode and drop it while they can see you but are not attacking. Several players could not get placement to work at launch; a developer asked for videos to fix it.
- Nests. Each species lives in a recognisable nest (Camillas in stone pillars), and its crafting drop lies in or beside the nest even when the animal is away. Nests are easier to scan because they do not run.
- Scanning from safety. If you grab something in a panic without scanning it, drop it somewhere safe and scan it on the ground.
There is more on this in the taming guide.
Hostile and territorial animals
Scorchweavers in the Valley undergrowth, nesting Gum Nibis and Bronze Wox packs in the Headlands are the ones that hit back. At Gamescom 2025 two protective animals took about half of Hennessy's health before backing off once she left the nest. Players on the forum also name "Chuls" as hostile animals near a fertilizer ingredient; Frozen Way has not described them yet. The answer is the tranquiliser dart, not a weapon: there is no killing in the game, and losing all your health knocks you out instead of killing you, except in Space Hell mode.
Animal hybrids
Animals can be crossbred too. At Gamescom 2025 Frozen Way said Camilla hybrids give different materials, such as wool that is both light and hard for tools. On 10 September 2026, 9.5% of Steam players had made a first animal hybrid (A new species…) and 0.5% had made every one (Xeno zoologist). The crossbreeding page covers the lab side.
Animals FAQ
How do you tame animals in Honeycomb: The World Beyond?
You befriend them rather than cage them. Point the wildlife cam at an animal to learn what it likes, then do it: copy a Camilla when it jumps, or put a strider snack on the ground and back away. Each animal earns its own trust; it does not carry over to the whole species.
Can you kill animals?
No. Frozen Way built the game around not killing anything. For hostile animals you carry a tranquiliser dart from the Field Sedation quest, which also lets you scan them safely.
What is the rarest animal achievement?
Xeno zoologist, for making every possible animal hybrid: 0.5% of Steam players had it on 10 September 2026. Animal Whisperer, for taming the Canul, was at 2.3%.
