Honeycomb: The World Beyond Game Modes & Difficulty

From Frozen Way’s launch announcement of 8 September 2026, developer replies on the Steam forum, and the new-game screen as shown in ProRogueBear’s launch video.

The four modes

ModeWhat it isOfficial description
ScientistRecommended”The most balanced experience, perfectly tuned for a great mix of adventure and exploration.”
SurvivalistFor veteransA tougher challenge where “vital stats, such as immunity, will deplete much faster”.
Space HellHardcore”The same punishing mechanics as Survivalist, but with permanent death. If you die, the game is over.”
EngineerCustomEvery gameplay parameter can be tweaked, added after demo players asked for more control.

In every other mode, running out of health knocks Hennessy out rather than ending the game. A knockout is a real setback, since you wake weakened and still have to limp home, but it is not death.

How much harder is Survivalist?

Frozen Way has not published multipliers. Asked on the forum, the developer said Survivor “makes a lot of your stats drain faster to make things harder”, and pointed to the release devlog. One player asked “x2 or x10?” and got no number. A Steam reviewer found the pacing “not overbearing” even on Survivalist.

Engineer mode settings

From the launch post and the new-game screen:

  • Building costs on or off
  • A god mode
  • Hunger and thirst on or off, and their drain rates
  • Immunity regeneration and stamina rates
  • Whether you lose items when knocked out
  • Instant crafting
  • Whether organics rot (“Organics Do Not Decay”)
  • Aggressive animals on or off, and whether animals start tamed
  • River force and material occurrence multipliers
  • Auto-save options
  • Draw resources: whether crafting uses up your resources at all (developer reply)

Players found the sliders confusing. The hunger drain defaults to 2.0 and item durability to 1.0, and a forum thread asking which direction slows decay was still unanswered on 10 September 2026, so test on a throwaway save.

You cannot change settings later

Several players found that world settings are locked at creation. One forum thread reads: “once you set it that is all you can do”, and a negative Steam review names it as the main problem. If you are unsure, Engineer mode with decay turned down is the safer start; restarting costs your progress.

Do achievements work in Engineer mode?

Yes. “The achievements don’t turn off in Engineer mode,” the developer replied on the Steam forum. See the achievements page.

What happened to Explorer mode?

In June 2024 Frozen Way announced a relaxed “Explorer” mode with less aggressive wildlife and more guidance. It is not in the launch line-up; Scientist and the custom Engineer mode cover that role.

Next: survival and immunity explains what drains faster on the harder modes.
